Producer Roy Baker recalled in 1999: "Bohemian Rhapsody was totally insane, but we enjoyed every minute of it. It was basically a joke, but a successful joke. We had to record it in three separate units. We did the whole beginning bit, then the whole middle bit and then the whole end. It was complete madness. The middle part started off being just a couple of seconds, but Freddie kept coming in with more "Galileos" and we kept on adding to the opera section, and it just got bigger and bigger. We never stopped laughing ... It started off as a ballad, but the end was heavy.
About the Band: Queen is a British rock band formed in London in 1970 by the late great Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and later joined by John Deacon (bass). The band's earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, but they gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock and this unique song has become their trademark even being labelled "symphonic rock" with its drama and changes of tempo etc. Queen's music is characterized by layered guitar work by virtuoso Brian May and overdubbed vocal harmonies enlivened by the flamboyant performances of frontman and principal songwriter Freddie Mercury.
The band shot up the international charts with its third album, Sheer Heart Attack (1974), and one of pop music's most expensive productions, A Night at the Opera (1975), sold even better. Queen's popularity waned for a period in the 1980s, but a stellar performance including this song at the charity concert "Live Aid" in 1985 reversed their fortunes commercially. Freddie Mercury sadly died of AIDS in 1991, and the band issued its final album with him, "Made in Heaven", in 1995.
Queen remains loved by millions and is widely recognized as one of the most popular groups of the 1970s onwards, spawning a hit London musical and a full length movie. Adam Lambert has stepped into the role of lead singer in the most recent tours since Freddie's death.
