Don Rendell Ian Carr Quintet

Shades of Blue

1965

UK 1st Pressing

33SX 1722

Columbia

Lansdowne Series

Mono

Here we have one of the rarest UK jazz records of all time, often cited in most collectable records lists and certainly the hardest to find of the legendary Lansdowne series.

This record belonged to my father who was an avid collector of rare Jazz vinyl and was lucky enough to own two copies, one that he played and this one, that he didn’t!  As a result the vinyl is in near pristine condition!

My father was luckier enough to see the band perform at a local college, and whilst there, got to meet Don Rendell and had him sign the inner sleeve of the record.  The signature reads “Keep Blue! Don Rendell” and has been kept in a plastic sleeve separate to the vinyl ever since.

The vinyl is housed in a beautiful 1st press front laminated sleeve with flip back edges printed by Garrod & Lofthouse and bearing the “Patent Pending” writing that only the very very 1st did of this incredibly short run of pressings.

The vinyl has the very 1st press black and blue Columbia labels, with the earliest -1U matrix endings.  Equally the mothers and stampers are the earliest possible at 1G & 1R!

As this is the very 1st pressing the tax code on side 1 reads MT rather than KT as it did on later 1st presses.

All this makes for one of the rarest Jazz records of all time and a true once in lifetime opportunity to own what must be the most pristine and earliest pressing of Shades of Blue in existance.

Sleeve Condition.

The 1st print front laminated sleeve is in really nice condition!  There are no rips, writing or splits at all. The spine is perfectly straight and all text fully readable! There is some very mild storage wear to the corners, with a crease to the top left and occasional laminate line and that’s all there is to mention.  The colours are as vibrant as they were on the day of release! The rear of the sleeve which is unlaminated and therefore open to damage still looks superb and very clean.  There is an occasion light age spot and mild ring-wear but otherwise it’s a stunner, with no tears, stickers or damage at all.  It’s a solid excellent that won’t disappoint! Splendid!

EXCELLENT

Inner Condition.

The 1st press poly-lined Emitex inner sleeve is in near perfect condition!  There are no rips, writing (other than the signature) splits or repair to mention!  It is still perfectly white and straight and equally holds the vinyl as it should.  The Don Rendell signature that has the inscription “Keep Blue!” is still perfectly vibrant and bold!

Label Condition.

The 1st press iconic black & blue Columbia labels are in fantastic condition.  There are no rips, writing or stains to mention. Under a strong light there is just 1 or 2 wispy ghost, almost invisible spindles!  It’s that good.  There is no centre hole damage at all. Perfect!

Vinyl Visual Condition.

The record looks great! It just looks brand new! It still retains its wonderful shine and lustre after all these years. There are no deep scratches, warping or dulling at all. When looking under a halogen, only the faintest of removals can be seen that you wouldn’t be surprised to find on a brand new vinyl!! This simply is the best copy of Shades of Blue you will ever find, played at most 2 or 3 times in its 50 year lifetime!

Vinyl Audio Condition.

The record sounds superb on all frequencies!  There is no crackle, distortion or pops throughout!  Just some mild static on the run ins and that’s it! It’s a nice punchy and clear audio throughout! The band is clearly separable by the ear with a superb dynamic sound from start to finish! A sharp and smooth sound that just leaps off the record!  It’s just simply amazing! Blue Mosque just jumps pierces through so beautifully, it’s impossible not to smile when you hear it! You won’t hear better in all your days! Pristine!
