While Ella Fitzgerald would continue to records critically and commercially acclaimed albums after her DECCA tenure (1945-1955), notably for Norman Granz’ Verve family of labels, many Jazz vocals aficionados, ourselves included, feel very strongly that she reached her creative and artistic peak during these early years, in which she recorded five albums for DECCA.

Original black and silver stock DECCA labels are becoming next to impossible to find in good shape; finding a near mint copy is truly a daunting task. We proudly present one such rare specimen here.

This Decca compilation from around 1957 reissues the minimalist 10" LP Ella Fitzgerald Sings Gershwin Songs with pianist Ellis Larkins from 1950, adds the earlier "Oh, Lady Be Good" with the Bob Haggart band, "Nice Work If You Can Get It" with Larkins, and a bit perversely, a tune each from Duke Ellington and Jimmy McHugh with the Billy Kyle Trio. Such were the scattershot A&R practices in those mad days after the conversion from 10" to 12," but it doesn't diminish the sheer pleasure of hearing the early mature Ella interpret and improvise upon top-grade material. The Gershwin ballad material with Larkins is exquisite; Ella really digs into the lyrics, sometimes including rare verses, and Larkins provides thoughtful, alert jazz piano accompaniments. Although the frantic "Oh, Lady Be Good" is a jarring change of pace from the rest of the program, it features a spectacular episode of Ella's scatting. The sound of the original mono LP is often preferable to subsequent CD transfers.

·       THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           This is the original, flat-edge pressing

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
