FRANK ZAPPA Lather / Six Things 1976 6-Song 12" Metal Acetate LP

Frank Zappa - Lather/Six Things

1976 original 6-song unlabeled metal acetate from the unreleased 4LP set "Lather." Warner Brothers initially rejected Frank Zappa's Lather project. After they prevented him from releasing it through Phonogram, Warner Brothers released most of the songs on the albums "Zappa In New York", "Studio Tan", "Sleep Dirt" and "Orchestral Favorites," of which only "Zappa In New York" did Zappa have any real involvement with. At one point Zappa took the acetates to Pasadena radio station KROQ and played the entire 4LP album, inviting fans to record it. Much of the common bootlegs of this album are from those recordings, as well as some acetates and test pressings that made it out. In 1996 Ryko released a 3LP version of Lather.

The following songs include the running time on this release next to the running on the official release and they appear to be largely the later released versions (though the xylophone in "Re-Gyptian Strut" does seem a bit more in the forefront than the Ryko version).

Side One: Re-Gyptian Strut (4:09 / 4:36), Pedro's Dowry (7:36 / 7:42), Strictly Genteel (6:58 / 7:04), Naval Aviation In Art (1:20 / 1:23).

Side Two: Music For Guitar & Low Budget Symphony & Bogus Pomp. These two tracks segue into each other to form one long track, unlike the released versions which appeared on the albums "Studio Tan" and "Orchestral Favorites," respectively (total running time 20:52 versus the 21:05 combined running time of the two tracks).

Disc is titled "Six Things" on a generic Kendun Recorders cover and has song titles handwritten on back. It is unknown who wrote this, but it is unlikely Zappa. "1" and "4-22-76" written on one side of disc, "2" written on the other. Acetate plays with some background noise, but actually plays quite nice for a metal acetate..
