Description

Artist:  KENNY DORHAM

Title:   “Jazz Contrasts”

Label:   RIVERSIDE.  Monaural pressing on medium weight vinyl.  Label is white with pale blue “reels” logo, black text, with deep groove.  Catalog number is RLP 12-239.

Year1957.

Personnel:

Kenny Dorham – trumpet

Sonny Rollins – tenor sax

Hank Jones – piano

Oscar Pettiford – bass

Max Roach – drums

Betty Glamman - harp.

Condition:

DISC:  Vinyl is NM- with full original gloss.  Has been played a small number of times and handled with care.  There are a couple slight hairline paper scuffs but no audible marks or distractions.  Plays beautifully with superb fidelity.  Labels are clean.  A very fine disc, play-graded and guaranteed to please.

JACKET:   Jacket is EXCELLENT with nice bright artwork.   Would grade Near Mint but jacket does have some minor curving at the top corners due to storage (disc is not affected!)  Laminated front panel is clean, glossy and bright; has small stain at bottom right corner and top right corner is slightly bent.  Seams and spine are excellent.    Reverse is clean and white, and has original retail shop sticker at bottom left.  Overall a very fine jacket.

Track Listing

Side One:

  • Falling in Love with Love
  • I’ll Remember April

Side Two:

  • Larue
  • My Old Flame
  • But Beautiful
  • La Villa

Review:

“Some of trumpeter Kenny Dorham's finest recordings were his sessions as a leader for Riverside in the '50s ….  This album is a bit brief in time (41 minutes) but contains many memorable selections.  Three of the songs ("Falling in Love with Love," a 12-minute version of "I'll Remember April," and the trumpeter's "La Villa") match Dorham in an all-star quintet with the great tenor Sonny Rollins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Max Roach.  The other three numbers (of which only "My Old Flame" includes Rollins) adds a fine harp player (Betty Glamman) and focuses on Dorham's lyricism.”
