Description

This 1960 Prestige edition of King Curtis' Soul Meeting is indeed the correct pressing. It is NOT a mis-labeled vinyl pressing of Miles Davis' The Beginning (cat. no. PRLP 7221) in a King Curtis cover.
Apparently, a pressing-plant error occurred in which pressings of the Miles Davis lp were inscribed with the incorrect catalog number (that of Curtis' lp, Prestige PRLP 7222) and were subsequently mis-labeled. Confusion apparently ensued, in which the inscriptions on copies of both pressings were scratched out and identified. Some copies of Davis' The Beginning, however, did not make it to their intended packaging. Collectors may come across copies of what appear to be Curtis' Soul Meeting, with the corresponding cover and label, but the disc itself contains a Miles Davis recording.
Did you get all that? Good. "What", you ask, "is so special about this particular copy of Soul Meeting?" Check the labels (see photos). It appears confusion over the catalog sequence extended to the actual printing of the labels. The font for the catalog number should read "PRLP 7222". It in fact reads "7221"--the catalog number for the Miles Davis lp. Somebody carefully wrote a "2" over the "1", in ink. Every instance of a mis-label or a switcheroo (that I have seen) regarding this particular segment of the Prestige Records catalog--a Prestige lp contained in a King Curtis Soul Meeting package--involve the wrong record with the right label. This is actually a case of the right record with the wrong label! The integrity of the release is almost intact, EXCEPT for that one misprint on the labels. The scratched-out inscriptions on the runout are consistent with copies of both records, mis-labeled or not. This is the only instance I've witnessed of a misPRINTED label.
Sorry for the long-winded description, I just want you to know what you are buying. In short, this is a vg+/vg+ copy of King Curtis' Soul Meeting, intact, with a printing flaw on the labels. "RVG" and "PRLP 7221" are inscribed in the runouts. Former inscriptions are scratched out. The vinyl shows no indication of distress and it sounds accordingly clean; I do not assign a near mint grade, it is either mint or it's not. There is light edgewear on the cover.
