Description

Shades of BlueDon Rendell and Ian Carr Quartet
Columbia 'Lansdowne Series' Label.  Cat. No. 33SX 1733
Matrix No. / Mother / Stamper:Side 1: XAX 2770 - 1U / 1 / GSide 2: XAX 2771 - 1U / 1 / G    KT tax code
One of the rarest records out there and perhaps the rarest UK released Jazz album ever.  Supposedly only about 500 of these were pressed. However, this one has a 1G mother and stamper on both sides, so it is definitely one of the first 500 pressed, maybe even in the first 300.  If you know this album then you will know that it is extremely hard to find and very rarely comes up for sale, but you would expect that for such a rare album.
It comes in the original Garrod & Lofthouse front laminated flipback cover and EMITEX 'tracing paper' inner.
CONDITION
Examined under a strong halogen lamp, side one has lots of sleeve withdrawal marks that are only visible under the lamp but too many to grade it better than VG+.  Side two has a scratch on this side but it is very faint and light.  This side also has lots of sleeve withdrawal marks.  Generally, the record has a wonderful gloss and comfortably has a visual grade of Very Good.
Played on a Rega RP6 turntable through an Arcam FMJ A19 amp and Monitor speakers, it plays as follows:

Side 1

Track 1 – A light background crackle, which can be clearly heard but is does not overpower the music by any means.

Track 2 – as track 1 but the louder music masks the crackle a bit more.

Track 3 – the amount of crackle has greatly decreased but its still there.

Track 4 -  As track 3

Side 2

Track 1 – Starts with noticeable crackle for about the first minute but it quickly dies away so that it is barely heard.

Track 2 – Same as track 1 finished – some infrequent and very light crackle.

Track 3 – Again, crackle is light and infrequent but it more noticeable on this quiet track.

Track 4 – Light crackle throughout as with most of the rest of the album.

Overall, the play-grade is Very Good with no 'clicks' or 'pops', no sticking or jumps.
Both labels just have the faintest spindle trails but very, very few.
The cover is something else!  It's hard to find fault with it! There is a mere hint of ringwear, a very light 5cm crease near the spine and an 8mm crease near the top edge.  The spine is crisp and sharp.  Definitely an Excellent grade for the cover!
The inner just has some creasing and some ringwear.

OVERALL GRADE (record / cover)

VERY GOOD / EXCELLENT

GRADING GUIDE - IMPORTANT!

I visually examine all records under a strong 35w halogen lamp, which shows up ALL defects.

I strictly grade my records according to the Rare Record Price Guide (RRPG), which, to me, means as follows:

MINT- Must be sealed
NEAR MINT - Totally unmarked, no scratches, not even faint 'hairlines' / sleeve withdrawal marks or any other signs of having been played.
EXCELLENT - No scratches, just signs of having been played, such as the odd faint 'hairline' sleeve withdrawal mark that is barely visible under a strong lamp, or spindle trails on the label.
VERY GOOD - The first mild scratches have begun to appear, but only very, very few.
GOOD - More scratches than Very Good and more severe, but I am confident that the record will play through without skips or sticking and will still provide a good listening experience.
FAIR - The record may not play through properly with a chance of it jumping and / or it will play with significant background noise.
POOR - It definitely won't play without skipping or sticking.

Below Near Mint I will use plus or minus with a grade to highlight fine differences.

COVER GRADES

My cover grades are EXACTLY as stated in Record Collector magazine / RRPG. Therefore, if a cover is defaced, stained or torn it CANNOT grade better than FAIR. Likewise, if any part of the contents are missing it CANNOT grade better than POOR.

All our records are dispatched using stiffeners and card mailers.

I have been selling vinyl for Oxfam for over 9 years, during which time I have valued and sold tens of thousands of records.
